635 Silmne RANGIFER (REINDEER) 14 1931 Aug. 1, Point Hope, Alaska (Arctic Area) The reindeer camp is situated about 10 miles east of Tegara, and is located near a narrow neck of land separating two long lagoons that run parallel to the beach and a hundred back from it. Here the den are easily corralled with the aid of the three bodies of water. Hirding is hard, the deer do not drive in a marching formation like cattle, but mill around in a wide sort circle, moving along the desired directing all the time. Thus it generally takes a dozen herders to handle 100 deer. This when bedded down, several men and dogs can do the work. Many of the "husky" dogs are trained to help. In working their own herd, the whole native village as can be present, help out. The yearlings, or the Chutes, are handled as roughly as usual but kidding and castrating are done different. Killing is done
