414 Gilmae Pacific Eider (2) 1931 July 5-7 Savoonga to Siviktoak + returns. 100 or so seen both on going trip & coming back. They were found from the beach 8 1/4 mile off Johns (that's all the farther out we got). Sometimes these flocks (3-20) were made up of mostly F's or all males & mostly F's or all F's. They rested in the Siviktoak lagoon. The nest with 2 dark green eggs had been taken over by an Emperor Goose. Saw them up the river as far as we went, some 10 miles. On the lakes inland, the birds were almost exclusively F; I shot 2 out of a group of 8 & as they flew over the tundra from the shallow lake where they had been feeding. Their strong even flight & the white backs of the males are distinctive features. The flesh is good eating when soaked over night in brine. Point Hope, Arctic Ocean, Alaska Aug 7.
