Gilmae Pacific Eider (2)
1931 July 5-7 Savoonga to Siviktoak +
returns. 100 or so seen both on
going trip & coming back. They
were found from the beach 8 1/4 mile
off Johns (that's all the farther out
we got). Sometimes these flocks
(3-20) were made up of mostly F's
or all males & mostly F's or all F's.
They rested in the Siviktoak lagoon.
The nest with 2 dark green eggs
had been taken over by an Emperor
Goose. Saw them up the river as
far as we went, some 10 miles.
On the lakes inland, the birds were
almost exclusively F; I shot 2
out of a group of 8 & as they flew
over the tundra from the shallow
lake where they had been feeding.
Their strong even flight & the white
backs of the males are distinctive
features. The flesh is good eating
when soaked over night in brine.
