Gilmore ALEUTIAN SANDPIPER @ 1931 rocky background and I wacked up To within 10 feet of some before seeing them and generally my first sensation of their presence was when they suddenly flew up right before me. They certainly "lie close" and perhaps they try to hide among the rocks as a method of escape. Their absolute lack of wariness costao seems rather stupid. Even shooting into the flock does not scare them more than 50 yds. away. They utter a squeaking short note of alarm when frightened to take flight.
