Pomarine
Parasitic Jaeger
the shore, tho I have seen them
a quarter of a mile out from
shore around the ice. Occasionally they chase the Kittiwakes.
They seem to be very curious &
often swoop within a few yards
of one's head, showing no fear at
all, of even a group of men
around a boat.
July 23. Several Miles N.W. Cape Blossom
Kotzebue Sound Alaska, at anchor
here tho I have observed about
a dozen of these birds that hang
around the ship. Two are in the
dark phase but intermingle freely
with the light. Early this morning,
5 A.M., Mr. Brower watched a couple
of Jaegers drive a Kittiwake around
in scandalous fashion. The Jaegers
have evidently driven off most of
the Kittiwakes, but they do not
seem to molest the larger Glaucous
Gull, of which there are about 25-
here.
