490 Gilmore PACIFIC KITTIWAKE ⑤ 1931 In small flocks they foraged over the heaving waters. In the dark of evening as we were coming down the Alaska Aleutian Straits in the fore front of a mean nor'wester, we ran into several flocks of 50-100 individuals on the water about a quarter of a mile off shore. The flocks are compact & they moved as a unit. Oct. 11 Akutan, Akutan D., K. Aleutian. Kittiwakes are not common in the bay, at least the inner end, unless there is a heavy wind blowing outside. This evening as a nor'west gale swept down on the bay, I saw a dozen or so flying 100-200 yds. high around the whaling station at the head of the harbor. Certainly they seem to prefer the rough passes to the protected coves and bays.
