DICKEN 1959 Journal (July 15 cont.) About 1300 went to Lomas, got gas, & bought supplies & had lunch at the Hotel Paris (N side of Plaza central). Left town & headed back N about 1630. Ran most of way into town. About 20 mi. N of town (Pabellon) we turned W on gravel road toward Presa Calles. The valley flow is mostly miles. About 3 mi from turnoff the road begins to climb. The vegetation here is mostly beautiful & exquisite. A mile farther than turnoff to S to Presa Jocoyque, & 2 miles beyond this another turns to N to Presa Pabellon. This is now the top of the first ridge. 6 mi from the turnoff The road comes to a town on the shore of Presa Calles. This is apparently Colonia Presidente Calles. This is where the gravel road ends & the dirt trail begins. About 1 mi N of town (by rd) I shot a lizard (#2052). The road skirts the N side of the Presa & then heads W. 2 miles N of town (by rd) we saw Horned Larks, & 4 mi. beyond Curve killed Thrasher & 2 Brown Towtees. 6 mi. beyond the turn we came to a river with a small settlement along it. Here we saw a large Squirrel under a culvert. I shot at him at a distance & missed & he ran into a hole, but I ran up to him & got a good look before he disappeared. He seemed quite yellowish. We also saw a pale looking cottontail here & a Curve killed Thrasher. Near the R. we saw a Black Phoebe, & Ned saw fish in the river. Just before the River we shot a young cottontail which looked the same as the one seen earlier by the culvert (N.K.J#1258 - 5 mi.

LIDICKER 1959 Journal (July 15 cont.) W/W Colonia Prezente Calle). This town is W of Presa Cals & quite a bit higher. The road goes southea S out of town & the turn back W. About 1 mi. beyond the R, we saw about 10 Lake S parrots & just a little further we came to a larger settlement where the road makes a set, & turn to the south (left). About 1 mi. down the road we saw an Ardea Brev + 1 1/2 mi. from this town another Sylviolygus. 3 mi. from town we heard a W. Preckwhats. About 4 mi. above this town (by rd) - 11 mi. from Col. Pres Celles + 17 mi. from turning from highway - we stopped to camp. This is an area of rolling hills covered with grass with a few scattered oaks. This is at the base of the second major ridge which lies directly to the W. There is a fairly large canyon to the N with boundary walls, etc. In some places there is patches of fairly thick growth of some willow-like shrubs. We saw a number of large Sceloporus (torquatus group) along stone walls. I set 10 traps along a stone wall [this was a small unit of Neotoma signi], 30 traps in open grassland, + 19 traps in scrubby & somewhat rocky area with patches of bearbush, etc. Dave set the canyon walls + also the stone wall. Ned set - the willow-like vegetation & head as well as further down the canyon. We saw a few rats at dusk + after dark, but couldn't get any. Heard a number of frogs calling which sounded like some leptodactylid. They were calling from the canyon walls + bottom. Ned caught 4 & Dave got 1 in morning,

L)DICKER 1959 Journal difficults from 870+ ft. Were 9 cd, 3? - all w/ desc. tails. 3cd, ?? : a) no emb, ind, farsm b) ring, 2 watery bulges in left horn (first, very early emb.) which was quite sd. Larger than the horn width. 2 large cl. in left or.; not virgin. c) recent portion of 2 emb but does not seem to be last; where swollen, 1 ridge full of very new cl. in [illegible] back over; no obvious other cl.; middle medium. Climbed rock up on mountain & set 42 traps among rocks for Nelsonia. Found droppings on one rock which was apparently Bassariscus. They were small, dark, & pointed, & contained fur. & set at S[tr] Schyle - trap new where I found the droppings. Went up an open grassy hill at dusk to watch for bats At 2000 an Epileurus went our high but I saw it too late. This was the only bat I saw in spite of the fact that conditions seemed ideal - calm, not raining, & not too cold. Had late dinner, after which I took some more bait to one of my skunk sets. Dave went hunting in Pm & shot 1 Sylvilagus floridanus (near a rock wall up th canyon) & 1 Sciurus foliopus. On way up to set traps in late afternoon, picked up 2 rat traps set for Sigistda merinus. Both contained S. leucotis (#s 2104 & 2105). Were several rain showers during night. July 22 Picked up traps on mountain. Catch: Peromyscus diffiult - 16. Also picked up another one of those small hybrids, which was hopping almost on rocks. Lost 2 traps. Pleased a ? Preso's Quail on way up hill. Also heard Ravens, saw Bluebirds, Spotted Towhee, Epilomys foliopus

LIDICKER 1959 (July 22 cont.) Thought was Rock Wren. After dinner I added fruit to my no.4 trap & also to my other no.2 trap. Set out 15 mins. Spec. in rocky cany canyon well above camp in flows which were not open with small rocks there like what I have mostly been setting up so now. Several light showers in late afternoon & in evening. At dusk waited for bats on the slope & of camp & in the canyon bottom. Saw none. Did see quite a few myotis velifer & slott ) flying around among the oaks on the slope W of camp. There was a moderate cast. 2 wind blowing during this time. Heard Canyon Wren singing from one of rim rocks where traps are set. The Petunia I was talking to this afternoon said that the area in which we as camped & particularly the valley below camp is called "Tamascelas". He couldn't write or read so he couldn't check my transliteration. After dusk I autopsied the P. diffilis which were to be thrown away. LIDICKER 1957 Journal (Jul 23 cont.) was caught on a fairly dry slope by a small house built in a heather-tail clump. No. 2118 was taken from a rocky slope just below camp. Packed away some specimens. Rain started about 1500 + stopped at about 1700. I took 1 of the 2 #2 steel + 2 wood-net corners + climbed back up on the net. Relocated Beechnies set already out - with 1 Newton corner + 1 Spotted Triche (poorly killed). Made additional set away 1 wood-net corners + 1 Bell-holed Grasshopper (poorly killed) as bait. Returned to camp for dinner. It began to rain again about 1900. Dave took last no. 2 steel + set it also on net, using 2 Mex. jumps for bait. I watched for bats in central or slope to W of camp.
