LIDICKER 1958 (MAR. 31 cont.) inddent. wren, Bullock's Oriole - 1, Western Kingbird - 3, Yellowthroat - 1, & sev Sparrow that were fast. Song Sp. Skinned arid & Left camp ~ 1350. Noticed that when Joshu trees begin to appear there is also also more cactus & tumbleweed appears. Lorre also appears & i see dom. in patches. Went E on Calif. 78 toward Barrege Valley. Went through Sentenac Canyon; this look like it would be an effective barrier to D. merriami. 4 mi. past jt. you come out into large valley which is strikingly different in vegetation from that on the W & S side of the Canyon. It is obviously much drier with ocotillo, Lorre, much agave, los n cholla, etc. (Yaqwi Well Valley). A little over a mile from the entrance to this valle we stopped & looked around. Saw Chipping Sp- con., Wh. cr. Sp. - con., House Finch - con, W. Bluebird - a few, Vardis - 1+, Hooded Oriole - 1+, Song Sp - few, orange cr. warbler - many, Gambel's Quail (heard), Costa's hummingbird - 1+ (sev. indident ?), Lejus californicus - 1. Continued on road over Yaqwi Pass - saw sev Phairopepla near turnoff to Yaqwi Pass. Yaqwi Pas is quite rocky, but merriami could probally get over them. Saw a shrike & a Sylviaizaga in this area.
