LIDICKER
1958
(June 27 cont.)
At 12.3 mi. S Casco we saw 3+ Black Vultures -
the first of this species noted. 2 mi further the
ocotillo begins to thin out & the way is
gets scrubbier - this is probably less good
merriami- habitat. Beyond this the ocotillo again
becomes thick but the shrubs remain thick also.
About 18.5 mi. S Casco you cross the Rio Nagoz.
About a mile further the country opens up again
into what seems similar to that traversed i'5-6
(34 mi. SSE La Zarca). At 1 1/2 mi. S of the Rio Nagos
we saw Wh. w. Dove-1, Scalded Quail-1, & Brown
Towhee-1. 4 mi. beyond the Rio we saw 2 more
Blk. Vultures & 3 Turkey Vult. Just S of
La Cuesta a large cave can be seen from
the road. The soil is quite gravelly S of La
Cuesta, but merriami may be present. Shortly
the rd. climbs up out of the valley & up on
the top of one of these hills is where we made
camp (3.7 mi. by road S La Cuesta). The
area is quite gravelly & very dry. We set out
65 traps.
