continues up. About 6.5 mi. E of Jacumba (yrd)
the road comes into a valley which could have
dips in it - this is the first seemingly
suitable habitat since the small area at Mt.
Spy. There is Larrea, yucca, etc. About 5.3 mi
from Jacumba junipers come in pretty thickly but
soil fairly sandy. This valley seems to extend
southward a no. of miles + seems to be eventually
enclosed by into. At ~ 4.9 mi from Jacumba the
rd. descends to 3000 ft. At 2 mi from Jacumba
the valley seems to extend southward 5+ miles +
no apparent gaps can be seen. We continued
through Jacumba to Boulevard to see the area
+ then turned around to set traps. The road begins
to ascend gradually W of Jacumba. It began to
rain as we came into 2-leaf Sage + continuing
intermittently 3/10 mi from Boulevard we saw
a Calif Jay. Our plan was to sample the
various habitats available in Jacumba Valley.
First we set 28 traps 3 mi NW of Jacumba
(2.8 mi. from Boulevard). This was a fairly open
brushy area, but with no definite dips sign.
We also saw a Calif Jay here. We could find no
diff. to get N of Jacumba so we went S about
1/4 mi. + set 2 rat traps in front of active-looking
fairly large dips holes. Then we set 16 traps in
a open field within the town which had
