DICKER 1958 (Sep. 12 cont.) Toward US 80, Rd. goes over low pass S of Camp + then descends all the way to US 80 (7.9 mi). About half way to highway vegetation opens up into open chaparral with chenise-like plant dominant. This type of vegetation continues all the way to Marigante + is probably not meriamii habitat. On US 80 we turned SE toward Marigante. On Marigante we bought a few groceries + then headed N on dirt road (paved for 15+ 1/2 mi) into McCain Valley. We camped about 1/2 way up the valley passed a ranch + just before the rd. forked - the rd. fork going to a second ranch. Here we set 237 traps (including 5 gopher sets of 10 traps) in brushy scrub areas, in overgrown fallow fields, in open chaparral (higher on slopes) + among rock piles. Was moderate ant. I dipso habitat. The general effect was not that I meriamii habitat. At dusk Al shot 1 Myotis scholatus. Later in evening we ran parts of our trap lines + caught up on field notes. Lots of birds seen around camp including huge black j quail. Sep. 13 Catch (3 1/4 mi N Marigante, 3600+ ft, McCain Valley): Dipodomys agilis - 12 Perognathus maniculatus - 15 Perognathus longimembris - 5
