To get into the foothills & 3 mi. from jet. we saw our first Citellus variegatus while we shot out of a oak. We continued through Canyon de Santa Clara & saw several C. variegatus until we got on to the W. side of the intro. 5 mi. from Alamos jet saw a Citellus speilosoma. Bird life was very abundant as soon as we got into the foothills. Among other things we saw Blue Grosbeaks, Black Phoebe, Curved billed Thrushes.
After we crossed a ranch fence a few miles E of the village of Navarre we began to see golden sign. Navarre is 11 mi. from the alamos site & the crest of the mt. is 9 mi. beyond Navarre. The canyon goes through mixed pine-oak woodland & near gets into tall pine forests. The slope to the westward is much more gradual & the rd. descends into oak woodland & gradual. There are some large Mormonite settlements along the base of the intro. 9 mi. from the crest we saw another C. speilosoma. We headed on dirt rds. toward the N until we came to the ranch of Don Ramon Prieto which is along the lower reaches of Canon del Alamo. After chatting with foreman, wife & kids we went off across their ranch to the SE for 200 miles & made camp by a fresita under some large firgion trees (elev. 7300'). Set out 51 traps near camp including 3 woodrat sets.
No sign of anything other than the woodrate. Arms set 11 golden traps (7 rats) with Taylor. & Art Luch
