SAN DIEGO COUNTY EXPEDITION
Sept. 7 - Sept. 14
- with Alan C. Zeigler & Dick E. Graham
Sept. 7
Left Berkeley about 2300 + headed toward San
Diego Co on US 50 + 99.
Sept. 8
Arrived in Bakersfield about 0530; took US 416
to Mohave, then US 6 to Palmdale & Calif. 138 to
join with US 395. Took US 99 S to Salton Sea
Desert. We noticed that the narrowest point between
the Santa Rosa Mtns & the Salton Sea was at
Travertine Rock, just S of the Imperial Co. line.
We explored the area from here to about 12 mi. S of
Truckhaven. We finally stopped + set up camp
4 mi. N, 4 1/2 mi. W Truckhaven, 33 mi. NW Kane
Spring. This is slightly less than a mile down a
dirt rd. to the W which junctions with the main rd.
about 5 mi. N Truckhaven. After that drove S
of Truckhaven + set out about 87 traps in desert
or wide of highway. This is one of the most
vegetated areas we could find in this extremely
desolate desert. There was some dips siren here +
some holes which were probably those of ground
squirrels. There returned + set 39 traps near
join of highway & camp rd. (4 mi. N, 3 1/2 mi. W
Truckhaven). There was a little dips siren here also +
