L/DICKER 1958 (Mar 30 cont.) coved hills ; maniani probably present. 2 mi. beyond Agurza is the San Diego Co. line. Here the rd. begins to descend slightly; as fall into t the W. There is still Cholla + shrubby veg. with much Adenostome, a little sage, & another [frustration] chemise-like shrub. The soil here is quite sandy. 3 mi. further this chemise-like shrub (Sotone arifolium) bark feels revealing a reddish color) form almost a forest 6-8 ft. high. The understory is still mainly sage. Another mi. & we reached Oak Grove. This located in a flat green valley extending eastward. Hills on E side (valley) look dry & maniani may be there. About 4 mi. beyond Oak Grove we stopped to look around. Saw a ro. of holes which were probably D. agileis; lots of gophers. Also saw Bluebirds, Audubons Warblers, Oregon Juncos, wh-c's Sparrows & Lark Sparrows. Another mi. further is a low green valley (Pardice Ranch) sloping southward. At 6 mi. beyond Oak Grove the elevation is 3200 ft. (Sunshine Summit) + a large valley slopes southward. At 8 mi. from Oak G. we picked up a wash going S. 3 mi. further (4 mi. above Warner Spgs) saw 2 Sp. Hawks; still in sage, open, grazed fields while aptd far to west. There may be lonely slopes to the east. At 2 mi. above Warner Spgs, sage brush, hills + seemingly suitable habitat
