(Sept. 11 cont.) I set 2 gopher sets before breakfast. We skinned our catch plus some left over specimens from yesterday. Saw lots of birds around camp including Mt. Chickadee, Plain Titmouse, redstart, warbler, Smt jay, ? tanager(?). Caught no gophers. Left camp ~ 1300. We continued S toward Buckman Springs in the hope of getting gas. We found that no town existed so we turned back toward Pine Valley. At about 8/10 mi. N Buckman Springs the rd. crosses a bridge over a small stream. Here we noticed a mine shaft on the hillside to the NW. We stopped & explored the mine. It contained 1 Cornsparrow, but we were unable to capture it. We continued to Pine Valley, bought gas then went back to Mt. Laguna. Saw lots of gray squirrels along this stretch of road including several DOR. After making local enquiry we headed toward Thing Valley on the Morris Ranch Truck Trail. The road winds down the mountain & finally into Thing Valley (5.9 mi.). We collected several lizards along the road. In Thing Valley the Morris Ranch Truck Trail junctions with the La Posta Truck Trail. We turned N on this & found (~100 gas) a locked gate across the road. We pushed & walked 1/2 mi. N to Thing Ranch & found no one home so we walked back to the truck & camped NB
