+ a Rattlesnake (large species) which we both ate.
+ no was discarded. We saw our Scaled Quail
on way down + Ward shot 1. On way back we closed
a brush of about 10 yd. quail (2 w3 days old) + caught one. I shot a Prairie Wither along trough.
A number of birds were singing + had flight songs. The song like a started ending. I caught nothing in 2 net traps around camp - picked them up. Had a 5 Citellus
nevadensis in steel trap set at morning along levee.
Squirrel catch. Dan shot a 8 red-eyed Cowbird in
Camp + Stokes saw a Yellow-billed Cuckoo go trough
Camp in early morning. We had a moderate heavy rain
in the afternoon. Yesterday we talked to a man who works for the fellow who owns the land we were
camped on. He told us there were lots of leaves in
the mountains + that they need 50 cows a year to
wolves. He also said there were porcupine in the
higher parts of the mountains. This agrees with the statement
of our neighbor who reported that his dog had found
a foragevine recently up one of the nearby canyons.
Song of Ainsworth mentioned above agrees perfectly with
Peters's description of the song of A. cassini.
Set our 2 softer set new camp. Caught a hard
Turtle (Kinosternon) in small pond at base of cliffs
behind camp. After dinner Dave + I drove down
to about 1 mi. of the advance site, on the main rd,
to set traps. We set 5 Schuyler traps
