LICKER 1959 in yucca thickets on crest just S of canyon. While in canyon ~ AM, saw car, lion tracks along trail looking W. Also smelled skunk along canyon wall. On trail back to camp saw fresh deer tracks & what was probably skunk tracks. June 22 Caught only 3 Newtons in traps (at 1850 from yucca clumps, & other 2 from orch outcropping, along canyon). Shot at a pair of Mead's Quail & startled them just any up side of canyon & the shot 1. She had 2 Scarletlets & car. ants + 1 piece of meat in her crop. She had recently layed an egg & had several large follicles. Neither bird made any calls. Also got a good look at a Wh-crested Hummingbird, but won't call to collect it. Caught a Benrich's War in one of the house traps, in the Ceacothrus. Picked up traps in Ceacothrus thickets in bottom of canyon & laid out new line of 28 along bottom of canyon in brush piles, over old logs, etc. Set 2 new Newton sets in yucca clumps (left at 4 o'd ones) + left out 2 Newton sets on canyon wall. Skinned quail, Benrich's War + stored Carl from yesterday & 3 wood rats. APM got a pair of Laguna jacobini & skinned one of them. After dinner tested new line of traps in bottom of canyon + moved last trap (a net trap) which had been spring tuned by a C. variegatus up into brush grass line which was then 31.
