Canyon Range Sta turnoff we stopped to look at a small flock of sparrows. They were Chipping Sparrows but it was noticed that they practically all had thin gray strips through their reddish crowns.
Sweeney Canyon may be partial barrier to migration esp because of its rockiness. Were beautiful red flowers carpeting work through Canyon.
At 5.1 mi. from County line the road gets into four meeniani habitat. At 3.4 mi. from County line the road begins to descend into the large Valley which extends Eastward into the Imperial Valley. About ½ mi. beyond Co. line we stopped to watch a flock of birds. We saw:
Audubon's Warbler - 20 ± unidentified, hummer - sev.
Orange cr. Warbler - sev. Bullock Oriole - 20±
W. Bluebird - 3+ W. Kingbird - 30+
Mockingbird - 1 Blk-thr. Gray Warbler - 1+
W. Palm Warbler - 1 Desert Sparrow - 3+
Chipping Sparrow - 6+ Lark Sparrow - 1
A little further down the road we saw another Blk.thr. Gray Warbler, 2 Brewer's Sparrows, a Horned Lark & a vardin.
We continued & met US so at Ocotillo. We then turned W on US 80 toward Jacumba. We went up thru Qn-lo-pek Range - very rocky & no dips in these hills. At Mt. Sep. there is a relatively small level place & this the road
