(Day 5 cont.) This river we again hit a 3.5 mi. stretch which appeared to be generally suitable to merriami. After this it seemed a bit too thick & grassy. 1/2 mi. beyond Fresnoillo there is a good gravel rd. going E to Estacion de Fresnoillo. We drove down this rd. & just 3 mi. from the jet, we stopped to look around & found some old merriami sign. This was about the first area that looked suitable. At 4.6 mi. from the jet, we turned N on a dirt rd. for about 1/2 mi. & camped (4 1/2 mi. E Fresnoillo). This is actually only ~1/2 mi. outside of Est. de Fresnoillo. It is quite open desert, but with some grass in patches. We set 94 traps in this area & shot 1 yg. Citellus. We saw no Lute that evening. Skinned the Botton's Sparrow. July 6 Catch: Dipodomys merriami - 8 Dipodomys ordi - 1 Perognathus maniculatus - 3 Perognathus sp. - 5 (1 thrown away + 1 skull only) Citellus - 2 ad. Mus musculus - 1 Left out 9 traps for Citellus; ran line at 1500 & caught 1 more cd. + 2 yg. (1 yg. thrown away). I was fairly sick all day & so Peter skinned 4 animals. Ran Citellus traps again in evening - got 2 yg. in 1 trap + 1 other yg.
