Perognathus penicillatus - 3
P. spinatus -1 (only animal caught in rocks)
Perognathus sp. - 2
Utah
Shot a Socalophorus around camp while shining
& also an interesting slender lizard (#1778)
which was on
the shaggy back of the mesquite tree in our
camp & matched it perfectly. It even "froze"
with its head arched upward which made it
look just like a strip of bark. We broke camp
about 1530 & returned to San Felipe where we
purchased some pan & then headed N after attempt
to find the dirt road which goes W from San Felipe to
Valle de San Felipe & Valle de la Trinidad, 7.6 mi.
N San Felipe (by rd) we saw a Swainson's Hawk
(observed perched as well as flying). We turned
W. on the dirt road to El Valle de la Trinidad
& went down this road 1.6 miles & made camp
at sunset (31 mi. N, 7 mi. W San Felipe). I set
46 traps & NIL set 25. There was quite a bit of
old deserti - sign, but nothing fresh. There was some
fresh warren sign. The soil here was still very
sandy but not as dry. Beaver came to look
for water. The vegetation was sparser
with fewer mesquite & palo verde & slightly more
cactus the last camp. The day had been very
hot (well over 100° F.). The night was also warm,
mostly clear, with almost no moonlight.
