LIDICKER 1958. (Mar 30 cont.) For mariani return. Around Warner Springs the soil is quite reddish; saw a few Lark Sparrows. About 4 mi further we joined with rd going directly to Scissors Crossing thru San Felipe Valley. We turned off on this road. At 9 mi, above Scissors Crossing is the San Felipe Maintenance Stn. At 4 mi, above Crossing we started to see a few (saw killdeer) Joshua trees. We drove to Crossing then turned around & went back 6 mi. to dirt road which turned off to S & went along San Felipe Creek. We camped a short way down this road (5 1/2 mi. N Banner, San Felipe Valley). Set out 64 traps mostly on shrub covered slope N of camp; also 2 gopher traps. The valley itself was fairly green & had probably been cultivated, but the slopes looked like fair mariani habitat & there was some sign that just. [illegible] was remaining. The shrubs were mixed & mostly unidentified, but Adenostoma was present & dominated in some areas (but was not real tell). Was cold, windy, & rainy during sites Mar 31 Catch: Peromyscus maniculatus -11 Onychomys torridus -1 Dipodomys agilis -1 (yy) Perognathus longimembris -2 Thamnomys bottae -1 Around camp saw: Ladderback Woodpecker -1
