(July 12 cont.)
Set out 47 traps on open gravel slopes & 2 catclaw
thickets before dinner. Met a man who was looking for
lions & he confirmed that the peak to the N of us
is Cerro Altamira, & he said the peak just S of us is
called Cerro San Juan. This is the one on which San Pedro
de Colores is parched. Set out 20 more traps along small
canyon near camp in brushy areas. Saw a Lepus californicus.
Next also saw a Lepus & a Sylvilagus. Watched for
rats at the entrance to sewer mine shafts near small
canyon near camp. While setting 20 traps alone I looked
down a vertical shaft & saw a small bat circling
in it. At dusk saw rats come out of one mine &
circled briefly in the depression between 2 shafts which
had several mesquite growing in them. I shot 1 mystax
from this group. I didn't see any bats which looked
different from this species. It was too windy & raining
for bats to do much flying about. There was a hard
rain shower in mid afternoon & light showers intermittent
into the evening. Dan smelled a snake while checking
some of his traps after dark. There was apparently no
heavy rains during night, but it was quite windy.
Dane & I strung a small bat net over the
entrance mine shafts in which I had seen a bat
flying after dark. Skinned the mystax white legs
skinned some lizards.
