Outer ligules al- mmost white, tinged purplish beneath. Central ones very pale yellow. Effect diff from usual for species. 3-2-39 Ellisia chrysanthemifolia Beith J 815; M#06 Fl. La-Tolla Hermosa, vacant lot east of streetcar between Camino de la Costa and Canada and Beaumont Ave. Corolla white, veined purple, yellow at base of tube; scales yellow, plainly visible (2x). Ovary truncate. Plant 4½ in high. [Mr. G 3-3 says name Eucrypta] — Greene now prefers it? 3-2-39 [illegible] Oenothera bistorta Hoo Nutf J685: O.— Hock M342. Fl. Petals all with dark spot at base. Ovary def- quadrangular at base but too young to say more. Within hairy, the basal ones tinged reddish. Earliest fl.-give effect of acaulescence, but plant has at now bent as tho going to be decumbent with beds in lf. axils. Calyx lobes with long spreading hairs outside. Petals 1/4 in long. [Dr. Pierce 3-3 agrees with this ident] [See O.micrantha 3-6-37] [See 5-1-39 3-2-39 Ameinckia intermedia FvM. J#4; M422 Fl. with above. [Mr.G. 3-3 says this ident prob. correct as it's the only species likely to be found around here]. Stems now to 15 in tall, narrower in effect than will (J), stand erect close at ground giving plant a gaunt look. Corolla rich deep yellow (not "pale") with darker spots bet. lobes. Exserted tube obscure limb of corolla keeps this from resembling "forget-me-not" [See 3-20-39

R.B.T. finds (20x) no sign of ciliation on keel any- where. Corolla 6-7 mm long. Effect as if it seems growing is bright blue with white spot above violet spot (elongated & narrow) below. This is produced by wings blue, shading to lavender at edges (20x); the shorter standard white or slightly yellowish in main portion (blue dots visible along fold hardly, if at all, visible to R.B.T.'s naked eye though evident (20x)); its edges toward base shading into same color as wings; keel whitish except at dull purplish tip. Racemes short (about 2cm long) of about 7 flo, on pedicels 3-4.5cm, well surpassing subtending lf. Bracts 3mm long, fall as soon, at least, as flo opens. L-fs 7-9, oblanceolate, largest 14x3 mm. Lowest leaf or petiole to 4.5cm, st. petioles short. to 2cm or less. Stems throughout with new branches fre- quently starting axially. Stipules narrowly linear & subulate, free portion 2-3mm. Pedicels 2mm. Of species probably focus acc to M. the most likely seem 10, 11, 12, 16 of these perhaps #16 is L. sparsiflora Benth. 4-24-39 Sphaeralcea fasciculata Arthur T634 = Malvaceae fasciculatum Greene M309 Fl. L.T. Crespo Drive. Shrub about 5 ft high. Seems surely this but upper lvs (only ones coll.) have lobes not pointed (as in ill #167 M) but rounded more like ill #166 M. (See M. Thumberi Gray B.M.G.C.P. 487) Stigmas capitate, bractlets present, ovules one ascending (see lacy M304). St, lvs, calyx, plant stellate scurfy. [5-19-39 Fl. Bracts well imbricate vs carious (only the very base young bract green) the thin broad, rounded tips making top of bud silvery v later deflexed. Recepta- cle, convex, rounded to broadly conical, naked (as far as careful inspection reveals). Achene gray fls with ventral wing and a concave lateral wing medial side. Disk achene (per B+ ribbed) with L.T.S. a polarange on vertical side. Need one circle diam. Rays white. Plant glabrous, lvs glaucous, 3-pinnate sided (but almost to mid ribs) the segments about 2 mm. wide v rather distant. Plant not annual, at least 15 in high. R.B.K. suspects this is same as observed elsewhere near L.T. and is an escape. Matches nothing found in T or M. In B.M.G.C.P. ^ C. anthifolium Brown, p760. Lvs crushed lachs have slight odor (perhaps suggestive of honey?) * [4-26-39? ] L.T. along shore walk Exactly the same. Com- mon as an - escape - in near - lots.
