5-1-39 Trifolium tridentatum Lindl. J538, M254 Fl v young fr. Dry roadside near Lake Hodges (Ill Rancho Santa Fe.) fls linear, 1-4 cm long, 2 mm wide, hence very diff from all [T] & M. Corolla 8-9mm long (standard purple, wings dark rich purple with distinct white tip.) Calyx teeth not tridentate but more or less abruptly narrowed into the acicu- lar tips [Calyx 7 mm overall, a split 2/3 its length down back, the other divisions being 1/3 total length. Calyx teeth v veins ± purplish.] x (See ill 526 & [T]). Involvece very like all exp [T]. The acicular teeth about as long as basal portion. N.B. Perhaps var aciculare McDermott except calyx teeth not “equal to tube” (M). Stipules “laciniate-toothed” (T) but not like ill (T) in that they terminate in slender awn-like erect tips. Heads about 1 cm broad v high. [5-16-39 Fr. Kearny Mesa. 5-1-39 Lotus strigosus Greene J551, M257 fl & v unripe fr. Near above. (See 3-23-39 found in same vicinity.) Seeds “granulose, quadrate, notched” doident seems sure. R.B.F. thinks this is surely the same as 3-23-39 but is not sure about 3-2-39. fls in 1’s or 2’s or occasionally 3’s v sometimes with bract. Pedun- cles no longer than fr. Pods ± 2 cm usually straight or almost so (occasionally curved.) Style as long as it re- mains on pod, inconspicuous v nearly a straight; when it falls, pod is blunt v beakless (vague), tip rounded downward (20x)
