"Dust now erect with no tendency to spiralize. Glumes almost smooth (a little scabrous on nerves). 1st glume 2 cm, 1- or partially 2- nerved. 2nd glume to 3 cm, 3- nerved. Lemma scabrous, 2.5 cm long (involucel 4 mm formed by acuminate teeth). Awns to 4.5 or 5 cm [6-5-89 F2. Mission Beach. 4-4-39 Bromus carinatus HVA-T80; M58 FL Loring St. (also near south end of park La Tolla). Spikelets 2.5 mm (or terminal ones to 3 cm). Lemma about 1.5 mm, awn about 8 mm. Also erect for glumes acc to [M]. Spikelets decidedly more flat than in the others. So 4-4. As sheaths are glabrous v spikelets not more than 5mm wide this is perhaps var Californicus Shear. 4-4-39??? Amblyopappus jansillicus HVA-T122; M566 FL sunripe fe. Bet Crystal Pier v Loring St. Ident, queried: (1) Fl heads v inod bracts "gummy sweet scented"; the thick glabrous ls are not. Lower too often pinnately divided into distant linear segments but swing to thick fleshy chars. Also "filiform" seems inappropriate desc for these segment. Receptacle now flatter rounded but not "conical." Plants to 6 cm. with many fl heads. Acheneas prob pubescent [4-30-39 FL adv fe. Surely same as 4-4-39. Papppus often higher dark purple. Some heads have more than 5 bracts in involucre.
