4-4-39 - pubescent but "viscid-glandules" (JvM) too strong for desc. your plant. Plant (as col.) has slender, white, under-ground, horizontal sts. (so nearly very likely perennially matted with emergent tips to 4 cm. high. Calyx about 3 mm. Petals white not more than half as long as sepals. Pedicels 2-3 mm. Plant looks like a miniature edition of S. macrotheca (See 3-6-39) found also 3-20 v 4-4. [See 4-16-39 (B) which raises queries about spec. of 4-4. 4-4-39 Arena fatua L. J 110; M 46 Fl. Pacific Beach (cf. with A. barbata J 8-23). Diff in lemmas obvious even to naked eye. 4-4-39 Hordeum murinum L. J 186; M 61 Fl. Pacific Beach (Common along line at La Jolla). Note florets lowest nodes do not show characteristics of glumes (all glumes being obtusac) and glumes of central floret in all cases studied) 2-nerved not "3-nerved." Ciliation very evident (20x) 4-4-39 Bromus hordeaceus L. J 78; G 163 = B. mollis L. M 59 Fl. Pacific Beach. Common. Glumes more acute than "obtuse" (M) but not acuminate 4-4-39? Bromus rigidus Roth J 78; M 59 Fl. Lorin St. edges vacant lot. Sheaths of blades pilose.
