3-9-39 Placelia distans Benth J 823; M 410 F&L Crown Point, 9 in high, stiff hairy. Live finely cut v fern-like in appearance! Styles divided almost to base. Calyx 4-5 mmht. Corolla bluish-lavender 6-7mm long (4½mm from base to highest point when fl. fully open, Stamens then projecting about 2 mm. Previous to this complete stage, when corolla more bell-shaped, stamens project very little if at all). Scales are broad toward base & triangular or free edge, these points meeting around filament so that they seem to form little cups when one looks down into fl. Upper part At top the scales aduate to corolla almost to tip, a tiny triangular tooth being all that is "free" (JvM). Hence R.B.Ko ? about species [Mr G verifies identity]
3-9-39 Calandrinia caulescens H.B.K. var. Menziesii M156 Gray J 345: C. ciliata DC. var. Menziesii Macby, Flv fr. Reno & Miramar towards Airport. Low ciliate var. rarer than in illa (JvM). Sepals 4mm v petals 5mm long hence fls smaller than in illa (JvM.) Seeds now brown in unspeled capsule. Strophiole indeed "minute" (J) [See 3-20-39
3-9-39 Orthocarpus purpurascens Benth J 944; M 482 Early fl. Crown Point. Lowest bracts green like the fr., others tipped purple v forming the cloverlike heads when infl still in bud stage.
