3-23-39 Carex spissa Bailey J189; M75-Fl. By Salix, Unmistakable! 3-23-39??? Gnapthaliun chilense Spreng J1068; M542 Fl. Roadside opp. Salix. (Not uncommon in neighbor- hood). Plant col. had one stiffly erect main st. 1d in high ending in a cluster of short pediceled heads, but having besides from tip, 2 short naked branches bearing similar clusters just within the, below these, 3 longer, almost naked branches bearing similar clusters at their tips. Lowest of these branches 3/4in. below tip; st. v 3/4 in long. Longest of these branches 1 1/2 in. Invol. bracts greenish-yellowish (when studied 4-1-39). At very base of main st., a secondary at 6" high bearing one cluster of heads. Leaves clothed with tomentum but show no sign of becoming glabrate on either side. Lower lvs (many on lower part) st. narrowly lanceolate or spatulate, upper lvs (diminishing in size & number, narrow lanceolate to linear acute; lvs def., but not strongly dicurrent at base, not at all auricled clasping as in G. trioleos ? 3-2 [G] founds 5-10-39 Poway Grd. maybe same as G ? 3-23-39 3-23-39/ Chaenactis artemisiaefolia Gray J1628; M 567 But (opening in house 4-7). Exact locus forgotten. P.B.H. considers this prob. correct from dess. will get if (JS). One fl. opened only when studied. [See 6-7-39 Fl. from same region as 3-23-39]
