4-8-39 Nilaria rigida Beuth J 139; M 30 Ft. Ocotillo. Identity from desc. Vill but R.B. Krumel has found it difficult to analyze desc. Perhaps spec not well devel oped. 4-8-39? Rafinesquia neomexicana Gray J 996; M 589. Bud v fr. Ocotillo. Ident queried chiefly because the matted (wooly) plume of pappus bristles is on lower half only. Bud shows that outer floare ligules - R.B.K thinks all are ligules (but evidence not conclusive). Only upper part plant ed but as far as it goes correct for desc. Dwelling fr 2-2.5 cm high, bracts conspicuously green in centers, white on margins, the smaller bracts at base curved out v down. Achenes 15 mm overall, the body obscurely tuberculate v mottled (T). Tapering into deft beak (prior body could be called 10mm v beak 5mm). Beaks not "stout" as compared to body. Pappus bristles about 10 mm long.* (very similar to involuc Calycoseris wrightii. [see Compositae] 25-6-39 4-8-39 Gerdea canescens T.v.G. J 1082; M 549 Ft. Ocotillo St simple, 6in high, terminating in one head (one very young bud 1/2 in below). Lvs (all towards base) hairy- wooly, entire. Bracts very hairy. Achenes sill (T) but the basis of ciliation (a.k.a.) makes pappus less simple.
