Look glabrous until closely examined (20x) Unopened bell, now turning purplish at tip 15mm overall throat of corolla 4 mm diam Type P. spectabilis. 5-25-39 4-8-39 Stillingia annua Muell J 598; S apinosa Torr M 285 F lva dv fr Ocatillo. Plant silvery v green with spinulose edges of ls (suggests an Eryngium in this). Rank smell. Each fl (2 or 3) subtended by 3 lobed bract ( which the 2 outer lobes consist of "Trumpet-shaped on pedicellate saucer-shaped glands. 5 calyx thin, white, 1 bowl-shaped and (in all flo examined) 4-parted lobed (T says "2-parted"; M says "2-3 cleft". Ident sure. 4-8-39 Croton Californicus Muell J 596; M 283 Flva dv vlabr fr Ocatillo. RBK finds no sign of petals (in 5 flo) but the glands which are into calyx lobes. [6-14-39 Flva dv fr Slopes above Sunset Cliff (Point Vons). Still no sign of petals. 4-8-39 Franseria dumosa Gray J 1108; M 545 F lva dv fr. Ocatillo. 4-8-39 Hymenoclea Salsola T.vG.J 1109; M 544 Fl v fr. Ocatillo.
