H. is only poss. genus (v plant has all the familiar looks of Salm. Flores) but achene is not 4 sided. H. annua seems only poss. species but desc. in manuals not very convincing. e.g. disk corollas yellow except on inside of Dbes(the part which shows in head, the pulplish color of disk being large- ly furnished by stamina & tips of chaf). Invol bracts very broadly ovate & very abruptly narrowed into long subulate tips (These tips conspicuous in bud). Achene now hairy [8-4-39 Mr. G. prints out space freely] at Nat. Hist. Museum with days deeply left. 6-29-39 Cirsium californicum Gray J 1165; M 582 Fl & young fr. Ranelio Santa. FL. Corollas white (or with croft a slightest touch of lavender) Heads 1-1/4 in overall (J). Invol 15mm high x 20mm overall wide, hence much smaller than C. occidentale Jepso [See 5-21-39], much less conspicuously arachnoid very deft narrow? at summit (usually more so than in most extreme of Jo'ill). Mo'll may pos as to invol: shape & s pines. Corolla throat (ie slight bulge where filament inserted) and lobes each 6-7mm. No confusion with C. occidentale possible. 6-29-39 Godetia quadrivilnera Spach J 670; M 336 FL (almost past) vinipele fr. Poway Park -> E serendio. Calyp tube 4mm, lobes 5mm. Petals 7mm., rick purple, "spot," if any, not conspicuous in withering fl. Stomons practically leafless. Capsules very strongly 8-ribbed.
