2-4 cm long. Very unlike B. capitata in general effect.
5-14-39 Bloomeria clevelandii Wats J233; M89 Fr. Kearny Mesa. Appendages form a rounded fleshy bead, each side of filament. Style 2mm v hence about same length as ovary. [6-29-39 Fr. Kearny Mesa. Pedicel now to 5 cm reddish black, with crepe-y looking surface. Joint in pedicels not found. Capsule 4-5 mm high.
5-14-39 Hypochaeris globosa L. J796; M587; G863 Flv j2. Kearny Mesa. Spp (??) 4-6, 5/10}-39). Outer, acute achene has pappus with conspicuous matted plume on lower part of bristles acdsc in Compst & 5-6. Inner, beaked achene has bristles more sparsely & inconspicuously plumeose. P.B.K. did not notice this on spp of 5-10 prob because achene may have fallen from fully ripened heads & this char easily overlooked in heads not fully ripe. Plant common along road v the little daisy like achene liberally strewn about. This diff in pappus not mentioned in M, J or G. Note: both sorts of achene have some shorter, non-plumeose bristles.
5-14-39 Microseris platycarpa Gray J991; M586 Fr. Kearny Mesa. Exactly as desc. Ident as succ as poss without fls. Sto 1 1/2-4 in, slender [5-16-39 Flvfe. Kearny Mesa.
