5-1-39 Oenothera bihista Nuth J685: O.—Work M342 F.l.v young fr. Near above. Effect of plant very dif. from O.t.-)3-2-39 (Acc.to R.B.'s memory Mr.G on 3-11-39 explained a plant of this habit one like 8-2-39 as being 2nd year v 1st year development of a biennial—both O. bihista. M. say 'annual.') Sts several 10-18in long, almost woody with reddish exfoliating epidermis. No rootlets to col. St. lvs all tend to be recurved, sometimes markedly so. St. very lfry. Lower lvs flat, entire (or ab- matted), narrow (4-5mm) & tapered to base; upper lvs with ruffled edges, wider (7mm), progressively shorter, not tapered to base. Lvs light green, villous. Lower sts with appressed hairs, upper sts v ovaries with some longish, soft hairs v glandular pubescence. Dark spots on petals inconspicuous when present. Ovaries deignare in cross section., sessile. N.B. Fls. turn reddish before falling [See 5-10-39 5-1-39 Centaurea melitensis L. J1168; M584 Berl Near above. 5-6-39 Centaurium venustum Robins J762, M376 FL Soledad. 2-3in high. No "red spots" in the conspicuous white throat. Sts simple v 1-fld [5-14 & 16-39 Kearny Mesa velsewhere in abundance, 6in v more. Conspicuous v lovely along roads
