Stigmas 2 in the 3 flo. studied? 4-8-39 Penstemon centranthifolius Benth. J 912; M 468 Fl. West J Ocotillo. Very showy [5-20-39 Red Palmer Beehive Verified as "Scarlet Badges" "Same as on ridge & descent" by Mr. Covel quoting Mr. C. 4-8-39 Encelia farinosa Gray J 1082; M 550 Flv fr. Ocotillo. Heads, after flowering bent abruptly downward; when crushed heads have sweetish (somewhat pineapple) odor. 4-8-39 ? Cryptantha angustifolia Greene J 847; M 428 Flv fr. Ocotillo. Using key in M. we reach F.E p 434. R.B.T sees no great dif. as to side on which calyx was hirsute but if there is a dif then it is more so on abaxial side (anyway our plant cannot be #15) Calyx strict, nutlets & bristles? Nutlets not "decisibly" heteromorphic but one seems always somewhat larger than others (as desc. for #21) and to R.B.T's best belief is abaxial (anyway our plant cannot be #16, 17 or 18). Pedicels short (not more than 1 mm at most. Racemes densely cespitoid. Plant 8 cm high, branching from the base up
