Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 3 Hastings Reservation
2 August Time to add:
♀444. This bird is still floating to some extent - note that Ron saw her at R1 and Finch on 16 July and that Nancy saw her at Lower Haystack about the same time. However, she has been seen more regularly back home - on ⚫ 6 July, 17 July, and 18 July by Ron. (Note that Larry saw neither ♀444 nor ♀446 her during nest watches on 31 May, 1,2,3,7,8,9,11,12,13,15,17, 18,19, and 20 June). Thus, although she is no doubt still interested in leaving, she is presently a bird who has Returned ~1 July (±1 week).
♀446. Nearly the same story as ♀444, though in this case I don't know much about where she has been during her absences. She was back briefly on 29 May and 5 June (Larry); otherwise gone until Ron saw her here on 6 and 18 July → Returned ~1 July
25 August With Ron reporting that 7 birds roosted in the 1978 nest hole we ambushed this morning and came up with 6 - including the 3 adults (who I wanted blood from), ♀383, ♀446, and one baby. Most likely the other ♀ (♀444) is mostly out carousing again and is the 7th bird; the other baby is almost certainly gone.
10 October 1530. Passed by here only to flush a bird out of the high hole (unopened!) (leaving some definite baby sounds from within! I went back to acquire the necessary equipment and returned immediately, and after something of a struggle managed to get at the 2 babies. They are about 10 (go to p.12)
