1979 Wallard D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Upper Arnold 2 Hastings Reservation (26 August) A3 birds and several unbanded birds (the former defending the good tree, the latter holding out in the crummy one). By now things are fairly calm with only intermittent chasing and a moderate amount of greeting. The A3 birds had pretty much taken over the core, while numerous birds, including several unbanded and a few that were banded (10♀ Red/light? ? 1♂ M/DB-LP ) were messing around in the periphery. Occasional Garricks Birds are picking green acorns. 930. 15' net up between the granaries-Pow-Pub (now ?520) caught. 1015. All pretty quiet at the moment. Ron going down to LA2 and Bianca. 1030. A3 ♀ (♀209) here again. Looks good for the 2 A3 birds taking over this territory, more or less as I expected. 1050. Still 2-4 unbanded birds fooling around the area. 1-3 birds over by A3. Mostly quiet, however. 1120. The A3 birds together at edge of UA2 with no further opposition of any consequence. 1130. Leaving. Still an occasional chase but all pretty slow. 16 September 1000. 2 birds in the isolated Blue Oaks over toward A1 flushed back across to here and were probably the UA2 (A3) birds. 5 October 1550. 2 birds flushed from here; 1, up near the top, was an unbanded ♀. There are some stores in the granary here. 15 October 1715. There are stores accumulating here; it looks as though the A3 birds have indeed moved over. 10 November 1230. Checking around here I found a ♂ in the '79 nest hole.
