1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Haystack-Blomquist Hastings Reservation (22 September) 750. 2 birds here: 1♂ and 1♀. 3rd bird, an intruder, flew down to them but was immediately shagged out. 800. 1♂ or/Blk#173 807. Both now in granary: ♂ BP-? / Blk#484 and ♂173. 810. That's it. Both birds here; no sign of a nest. There are, however, a few stores (<25) in the granary already. The birds are doing some storing here already. 12 October 900. No birds in any holes here; also no birds seen. This group has lots of stores, though: 807. 13 November 1052. ♂ or/Blk#173 sitting in V0 perch tree. Lots of stores here. 14 December 1530. Counted stores: 2530. The granary here is truly stuffed, perhaps exceeding the glorious winter of 74-75 even. These birds have really done well. They even have a few acorns in the fallen limb. I also got a sample of 75 acorns from the tree and replaced them with my own. I saw no birds coming or going. 1540. As I was leaving I noted ♂ or/m #173 sitting over in one of the standard perch areas. 1543. ♀ here also, but left before I could get any bands.
