Melanerpes fornicivus
Hastings Reservation
21 January
1230. Watching.
1320. Finally: 3(!) birds together: ①♂Bilk/an #476, ②♀W/lt #260,
and ③♂Lkt-Bilk/Light #347 (previously thought to be defunkt).
Don't know where this bird has been since last spring,
but he is clearly here now (at least there are 3 birds
here and he is the likeliest candidate for the 3rd).
1330. Leaving.
12 March
1045. Watching: Two ♂♂ up in the main tree: ①♂Lkt-Bilk/Light #347 and
②♂Bilk/46?#476.
1140. May have been a ♀ here briefly.
1245. No good sign of the ♀, even though I did end up with
reasonable looks of the 2 ♂♂. It would be sad if she's gone.
Counted stories: 7. These birds are pretty well out.
27 March Two birds were flushed by Ron from the 78 nest hole
this evening.
12 April
1300 Some of the far-off Carricking I heard up at School Hill
is from here - someone is upset in the Main tree and there are
a bunch of birds around (note also ♀260's appearance
for move) up at School Hill - see SHill notes).
1304. Somebody getting chased in Main Tree (more Carricks)
♂ 1Lk-Yel #298 from 1500 in 1800 "nest tree," away from main action.
1308. A ♀ (ub?) is doing the chasing over there. Meanwhile,
there's a ♀ with the 1500 ♂♂ over here: ♀Yel-Bilk/Yel-wnt #435.
♂or-Yel/Dg #297 here also. Meanwhile some real fighting in the
nest tree - I'm moving over to there.
1320. ①♀u6 here Carricking; probably another also. There
are at least 2 ♀♀ here.
