1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lambert Hastings Reservation (12 May) 911. Poof! Several birds here, inc.①♀ub. (!) ♂banded. Rather confusing, really. ♂ub was not chased (♂ did chasing right then). ♀could, I suppose, be the old unbanded one for here. 14 May 700. Watching. All quiet. 715.①♀ub walked as she landed atop the nest tree. 720. Several birds here somewhere. 725. There appear to be 2 ♀♀ here:① above and ②♀♂ /or #289 from A3. They do not appear to be pleased with each other, Some Garricking here now. 745. A lot of Garricking (by one bird) now. 756. Third bird:③♂♂ #284(?). 815. Leaving. No further action here. But things have clearly changed, with a new ♀ here and the ♀ position, rather than the ♂ slot, now under contention. 17 May 945. Activity here! 3+ birds:①♀ub seen on arrival. Two birds together.① + ②♂♂ /or #284. Third bird being chased. Lots of calling here. 955. ♂284 drumming; also leading the way to chase out the 3rd bird. 1002. ♀ just drummed while atop the old nest tree with the ♂. 1010. Leaving. Looks good for this group. It's interesting that it's the ♂ who ended up staying, however, when it was the ♀ who initially looked all set. 24 May 805. Watching. Nothing happening at the moment. 835. Finally 2 birds showed up. Both sitting quietly together. ①♀ub. Other a ♂. 850. Things still quiet. I didn't get a good look at the ♂, but
