1979 Walter D. Koenig
Melanerpes formicivorus
Lambert Hastings Reservation
(29 April) Even though no one appears to be roosting here as yet (and thus the status of this group is uncertain) I will assume slightly prematurely that this group does exist:
Add: ♀283, ♂284. Not here 14 April; latter possibly here 22 April; both here 28 April (though the status of ♂284 at that time was certainly questionable)
→ Returned here 23 April 1979.
Unbanded. Same as ♀283 above; a rival of ♂284 at the moment but somewhat ahead, it would appear
→ Moved to [age unknown] here APPROX 23 April.
3 May 1840. Nobody in any holes here, despite it being nearly dusk and totally fogged in (visibility ~100ft).
4 May 1900. Heard some noises over here suggesting that there may have been somebody roosting here.
5 May 545. No one over here. 600. Still nothing.
6 May 1130. Watching. No action here at the moment.
1215. Nothing. No sign of anybody here (except for one brief wake downhill). Not at all clear that anybody is sticking around here. Those birds here last week may simply have come back temporarily.
7 May 1350. No sign of anyone in passing.
12 May 900. Now watching—we did note some activity up here earlier while elsewhere on the Arnold. Presumably at
05 banded (Re&Im??). ♀ banded also, I believe.
902. 3 birds here—someone got chased. We may back to where we were 2 weeks ago.
910. Leaving. They may be back, but I'll have to check again.
