1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 (3 May) 1220. ?wn-LP/Maure? Chasing ?444. Possibly ?222. Yes, I believe so. Yes, ?8222 here for sure—wing-streaker gone. 1230. Larry has gone over to watch at Finch, where there is a lot of activity also. I’m now watching from the hide. 1232. ?444 and ?269 are close, and avidly greeting ?ub6. There is a 3rd ? here, however (at least some). 1238. ?269 drumming in granary. 1245. Caught ?ub6 (now #486)—I think this is the unbanded ? here (he got caught when he chased ?444 after they were all sitting peacefully in the granary). 1310. Watching again. (?486 released). 1320. There are at least 2?? here; one is ?486. 1330. ?222 here again. 1333. There is an ? unbanded ? cutting in the Valley Oak just up from the hide. ?486 is again aggressive towards ?444 (but not ?269). Also up in the VO above the hide is ?8or/DB—yet #294. Have yet to see this bird in the granary (nor ?183). 1340. ?294 just landed in the granary. Some Carricks from up above me. Finally ?Nawer#183 with ?486 in Sycamore by the road. 1355. The remaining chasing, etc., is pretty much going on in the VO above the hide now. Otherwise the action is primarily greetings among the 2?? and R1??. 1400. Leaving; nets still up for now. 4 May 1215 Still lots of activity here—?269 seen. Birds still quite active and involved in some chasing.
