1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanesperes formicivorus Lambert Hastings Reservation (16 September) There appear to be no stores put away here yet, but this area is well supplied with acorns. The group should be in good shape from here on. 5 October 1555. Nobody seen in passing here, and only I stored acorn noted any where in the granaries. 15 October 1700. Still no sign of any life here; it would seem as though the recolonization of this territory was brief indeed. 16 October After looking as though a renaissance was taking place here, the group appears now to have relapsed into oblivion. Since the "recolonization" was so brief, I will consider that the area has been effectively empty since last spring: 3284, 9633 (unbanded): Abandoned about (seen again): 31 May ± 1 week. This will change if in fact the birds are still here, which they certainly ought to be. 10 November 1245. Checking here, I didn't see anyone but discovered that there are lots of stored acorns here! Thus, the territory is resurrected after all! Some of the trees here are in fact dripping with acorns; whoever is here should have little trouble packing their granaries with stores. 11 November 1240. Watching from hide. 1330. Zilch. Counting stores: Lam FT: 142 "Next" Tree: 99 Hast FT: 385 Hast VD: 121 747. Not bad, but still many holes unused.
