1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation 20 January 1215. Watching. Still doing pretty well on acorns here. 1330. There are birds here, but they are shy of the hide. Think I'll go, leave the hide, and try again in a day or so. 22 January 930. Watching. 1010. ①♀ OB-0r #373. Here briefly. 1030. ②♂ub; ②♀ub; both here with ③373. Possibly a 2nd ub ♀ here. 1050. ③373 hasn't stopped "chattering" like a baby since she got here (♀ub has been sitting here the whole time as well). 1055. ♂ub left, but ③373 still continues to chatter! 1130. ③373 and ♂ub back. 1145. Leaving. Looks like just these 3 birds here, though it may be that there is a 2nd ub ♀ (but I actually rather doubt it). 5 February Watched here at dusk, when I saw at least 4 birds, all of whom (I think) roosted in the low hole! 7 February 700. The ambush was a full success, netting ③373, 1 unbanded ♂ (now #481) and 2 unbanded ♀♀ (#482 and 483). Everyone look like an adult, as expected. The whole group is now presumably banded. 11 March 1035. ④482 at Plaque- see Plague notes. 13 March It may be premature, but it looks good for ④482 moving down to Plague → ④482. Moved to watched grp ☑ 10 March 1979. 12 April 850. Up here with Larry Hanks. Flushed 1 bird from granary on arrival. None in any holes, also no stores, best I could tell. Now watching from hide. 950. Leaving Larry here. Nobody's returned yet.
