Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak
Hastings Reservation.
(11 June) the hole tonight, but 1) someone did roost there, and
2) I think (98% sure) that it was ♂102.
12 June I attempted another watch here from 630-730, seeing
no visits even though there were some birds in the area.
At that point I checked the hole, but the babies are
still miraculously alive and kicking. I then watched
another 45 minutes to no avail. How they do it is
beyond me. They must be fed sometime during the day here,
but when?
1950. ♂102 definitely was the bird roosting in the nest
tonight (I identified him by facial pattern in the light of
my flashlight).

1800. Opened the nest to check up on the babies, both of whom
are, amazingly enough, fine.
2000. Nobody roosted in the nest with the babies this
evening.
20 June 2005. Nobody roosted in the nest hole with the
babies again tonight.
21 June 700. Banded and bled the 2 babies, now #497 and 498. Both
looked fine except for the left leg of j498, which bent rather
oddly just above the foot (normal j498). He appeared to be able
to grasp and hold onto things normally, however, so I
would think he'll be fine. (If this is a bent or broken bone, I
may have caused it when I removed his nest band. It was not
seriously hampering him, however, and hopefully will have time
to heal before he fledges).
29 July This territory not affected by the fire or cleanup at all.
