Melanerpes fomivorus
Lower Haystack
Hastings Reservation
14 April 500. Ambush failed. 500 is too late - 445 is about right
(or earlier) already.
1900. Nobody roosted here this time. Back to square O.
23 April 1645. 8'307 in sap tree. Several minutes later a was
in this area also (though not in the sap tree itself). None
in any holes, however.
26 April 8'307 over at Hay-Blom.
7 May 1845. 2 birds in the '77 nest hole - presumably denoting
where these birds are now roosting.
16 May 1715. Nobody seen here in any of the holes or [illegible]
26 May 1600. Checked the '77 nest hole, where Nancy had seen a
bird looking out of the hole, but there was nothing inside.
2 June 910. 1 bird flew in from the chaparral area on the Big
Creek side of the hill while I was walking around here,
but otherwise I didn't see anyone and there was noone
in any of the known holes.
6 June 1700. Noone in any holes here or seen in passing.
10 June 1500. Opened the hole in the Granary, where Nancy saw a
bird again recently, but nothing.
Also, there are no stores here as far as I can tell.
18 June 1450. On the advice of Nancy I checked the hole in the granary
once again, this time flushing out the and finding 4 eggs.
20 June 1650. Holy cow! Upon coming to the hole I flushed out
& M / LB-WN #461 - one of last year's babies I wrote off last
summer long before he even molted! Sometimes I wonder
whether I in fact have the faintest idea what's really going on
with these birds. (go to p. 6).
