Melanerpes Fornicivorus
Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co. Calif.
23 March Ted and I walked up over to the territories near
Hastings up on lamberts. We saw no birds, but the
territory where the revolution was in April 1977
(Near Lambert) does actually have stores remaining.
Neither of the other 2 along the ridge from "Lambert"
group have stores, including the one with the big
Valley Oak and the near one (Bar-6-q).

31 March Here we drove along the Nacimiento Road about a
mile or two past the McIern Trail, then back around the
San Miguelito loop. The area here is of course beautiful
prime Wicker habitat, with every other Valley Oak
full of stashes. Nonetheless, it's clear that it was a bad
year here as well - we didn't see a stored acorn the
whole day (I probably looked at 25 granaries at
least). We did note 2 or 3 groups (one of 3 birds
only along the San Miguelito loop); these birds were
staying close to each other and may have been about
ready to start nesting. All in all, though, a Waka
was a relatively rare sound here today.

in any of the known, obvious holes.
