1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanarpes formicivorus Lower Haystack (26 July) for a fledging date here). Apparently a distinctly younger chick is at a marked disadvantage after all. In any case, I found a few color bands and there is no doubt that he was #512. I cleared out the remains as best I could. 22 September 815. Watching. 819. Intruding (?) ♀ Da-Or/Da-Or (Da or DB) #478 plus 2nd bird j?♀Io/la#496 Both together and quiet, looking over the granary. [Both these birds are from Blomone] 823. Finally ⚪♀Da/led #515 discovered them. 824. Both intruders flew off back toward Blomone. 832. Apparently an intruding adult ♂ here also (♂m, ?), just confronted by 80r#307. 900. 3 birds now over in the saddle: 8307, ♀, and ⚪jw-1/w#511. 901. ⚪ub just flew into granary and is investigating it. 905. I think I had ? N/4?#461 (?) here preening. Still watching. 920. 2 ub birds (both 8♂, I think) in the lobata cup here on the hill. Seem to head off towards the valley when they leave or get displaced by the residents. 935. Leaving. It would appear that everyone is here, but I do need a better look at 8461. 945. There are 2+ birds - not LHay birds, I think- over in the far field over beyond the '75 nest tree. They're harvesting acorns in the Valley Oaks over here. 955. None in any holes here and no sign of any stored acorns as yet. 12 October 830. Checked all the holes here, but no sign of life anywhere, even in the granary. Things were very quiet in the area.
