1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fornicivorus Arnold 3 (3 July) 3 unbande d. Replaced 8120 on 21 June (see Ron's notes). 88123, 126. Seen here on 25 April; both at Bianca on 12 May, at which time they were fairly new into their new group → Moved to watched group ~30 April (note that the exact alliances of both these birds have frequently been in doubt; see 29 April notes.) ♀289. Last seen at A3 on 24 April; gone immediately thereafter (25, 28 April); seen at Lambert on 14 May → left group about 29 April. ♀290. Last seen here on 9 March; not here 14 April and beyond, but most likely seen intruding at Black Oak by Ron on 20 June → Left group about 27 March ± 2 wks. 7 July 615. 2 birds seen in the area while I was setting up an ambush at the '75 nest hole. Also I want to note the decapitation of this Valley Oak, whose entire top has fallen since the last time I was up here to clear out the Starling nest. 8 July 600. In an unprecedented 3rd straight successful ambush in as many days I nabbed ♀207 and the new unbande d ♂ here in the '75 nest tree. The ♂ is now ♂508. 29 July This group took the most serious losses of all from yesterday's fire. Not only was most of their territory chewed up (down almost to South Ravine, at least) but their granary burned and was later felled by the CDF crews. This tree, a very long gone Valley Oak snag, was definitely past it's prime - in fact I'd admittedly been holding my breath during every windstorm of the last several years - but it was still
