1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 4 (10 May) 1030. The ♀ is investigating all over here - the knoll, the locusts, the live Oak at the corner; even the Valley Oak granary. 1035. The ♀ is definitely ♀ Yel-Da/Yel-Da (Da or black). 1145. Break ended. ♀ is ♀ Yel-Bile/Yel-Bile #397, fledged at Wheate in 1977 and last seen there on 5 July 1978. She is now back up at the hole on the knoll. I just heard a few soft Garricks, but all in all these birds are fairly sedate, though they do greet each other regularly. Nevertheless, they are giving an occasional Garrick, even though, as far as I know, they are the only 2 birds here. 1150. Both birds on the knoll, and both look quite serious. I think they may be here for good. 1200. Both birds are in the Valley Oak along the dump road just down from John's House fighting off some Downy and Nuttall's Woodpeckers, who themselves are fighting over some hole(s) here. The ATW are not being very thorough, but are clearly interested in checking out the whole area here and, to some extent, asserting their dominance (don't quote me on that). Actually, there are some bigger holes in the tree here which the ATW were interested in; they were not the objects of contention for the smaller woodpeckers, however. 11 May 615. At least one and I assume both birds were here this morning in passing. I also heard some Garricks as I passed - no doubt about it - new birds seem to Garrick even when there are no other (apparent) intruders or rivals.
