1979 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Finch Hastings Reservation (2 April) which of course would be significant, but in then she moved (I thought to the VO perch tree), and when I looked at the (same)? Bird sitting in that tree it turned out to be a banded ♂? Rat/Darb-? [#67?] (darkish eye). In any case, somebody is still here, even if they don't have a ♀ yet. No sign of anyone else here by 910. 1820. (Near dusk) All I found at the Sycamore nest tree was a Pygmy Owl just outside of the '77 nest hole, but over in the upper hole over the road in the Sycamore granary an AW was looking out at me. 13 April 1130. Saw ♂66 hawking in the Sycamore storage tree and ♂282 over on the Sycamore nest tree. None in any holes, but there is some action here and something may be up. 15 April 930. Watching. Some calls here - sound like they're from way up the hill 943. Proof! At least 5 birds appeared simultaneously in the VO granary, flying in from the other side of the road. I didn't identify any for sure, but I think they included at least 1 ♀. Unfortunately they dispersed almost as quickly as they appeared. 947. A ♀ now atop the nest sycamore. 1015. Several ♂♂ and a ♀ here now. Identified were (1) ♂ LD-IB/M #67, (2) ♂ UA-DG/UA-DG #63, and (3) ♂ M / Red-Tan #282. 1030. ♀ is here: ♀ M/light- [♀293? - see below]. 1045. Some chasing up in the live Oaks. A ♀ sitting on the Sycamore nest tree just flew over to R1 (suggesting that she is probably ♀ M/or-LA #293?) 1052. Someone is Unkinking (carrick?) here in the VO.
