Melanerpes formicivorus
Road I
Hastings Reservation
16 May
825. Several Garricks and some activity over here-
things don't appear to be entirely settled yet.
835. 003m/DB or #486 seen here (apparently leaf
gleaning, though he may have been after catkins)
along with ♂♀269. (in granary).
23 May
1130. Somebody here is just sitting and Garricking. Things
are still unsettled here. Watching.
1136. ♂DB-wN(w)/or #269. ♂♂ or-wN/or #486 chasing someone.
♂♀DB-wN(w)/or #444. This last bird is still getting displaced by
#486: this may yet be the root of the problems here.
1148. ♂444 just gave 2 loud Garricks while sitting alone
atop the Sycamore perch tree. Furthermore, ♂444 seems to
be here in the granary only when the others are scared off.
1150. ♂444 Drumming in the granary.
1153. ♂♂ or/DB-wN #294. Also an interaction between the 2
♀♀, who are both in the granary. ♂♀269 > ♂444, who begged
submissively in her presence. But ♂269 does still tolerate
♂444's presence for sure.
1155. Leaving. Still things happening here!
1 June
1400. On my way to the Valhalla tree (where Larry saw a
bird in a hole this morning) I flushed a bird out of a hole in
the Sycamore by Finch creek. In the Valhalla area were
several birds and at least one of the holes is in good shape,
but there are no eggs as yet.
1430. Bird in the Sycamore hole again! Arghh!
1900. And again! This time a ♂!
2 June
1800. Nobody in the Sycamore this time. Whew!
